Your Local Military Surplus Store Is A Good Place To Shop

By Lora Jones

If you look at your nearest building site, chances are that you will see Army style clothing. This does not mean to say that the Army have now gone into civil construction. It is more likely that the construction workers know how hard wearing the clothing is. This is why a lot of them buy from their nearest military surplus store.

The way that they see a work boot is totally different to the average person. A soldier spends a large proportion of his day in boots, so they have to be dependable, provide various safety functions, yet at the same time remain comfortable to the wearer. A construction worker also has exactly those same basic needs.

The average person will not think about the thinking and testing that lies behind military equipment and clothing. The fabrics used are both strong and lightweight. Areas subjected to harder wearing, elbows and knees, often have extra thicknesses. If the fabric is tightly woven, it will be mainly windproof.

Something else that many purchase are gloves. Gloves are required to either afford protection or to keep hands and fingers warm, hopefully both. However they should not be overly bulky, which would limit all tactile dexterity. The Army also thought up those same requirements.

The foul weather clothing has also been rigorously tested. It must be able to stand up to some of the harsh environments that the Armed forces find themselves operating in. So a lot of people have seen the value of giving Armed Forces quality clothing a second lease of life in the civilian market.

Another beneficiary could be the average weekend hiker. They too want good quality footwear, and quality protection from the weather. Yet again such items have often started out in the world of the forces.

Footwear and clothing are just the tip of the iceberg for the keen hiker. Think of navigation, their map will probably be carried in a map case. They will either be using a compass or a handheld GPS unit. Maybe they are also carrying a lightweight tent with them. All of these items are available at affordable prices at your local outlet.

For the average handyman, tools are always a popular item on his shopping list. The Army always insists that their tools are able to be used anywhere, in any climatic condition. Companies realise this and so spend a good proportion of their budget and development time ensuring that these needs are met, if not surpassed.

As a consequence more and more people are seeing the worth of shopping at a military surplus store. There are now people from all walks of life shopping there, in much the same way that there are people from different backgrounds serving in the forces. These items are not faulty, they are just extra to requirement as something uprated has come along and taken their place.
