Help In Choosing Atlanta Roofing

By Andrew B. Spates

Since man first found shelter in caves, he has fought with leaking roofs. Water drips can be uncomfortable for the residents in a home and cause damage to the structure of the building and contents inside. Today there are more choices than ever for someone looking at Atlanta roofing materials.

In the USA, three-tab, asphalt shingles remain the most popular choice for homeowners and contractors alike. There are other choices as well, some that are classic while others are new engineered systems using recycled materials that would otherwise go to the garbage dump. Many of these choices can provide a great look to the structure which they protect.

The most common material in use today are the asphalt three tab shingle. These materials offer an inexpensive option that looks good with many types of architecture. They are available in many different colors as well. Additionally, most of these shingles offer a minimum of a 20 year guarantee, and some are warranted for up to 30 years.

Wood shingles and shakes were used for homes for many years prior to the development of asphalt shingles. When correctly maintained, wood can last 50 years or more. When installed using galvanized nails instead of the recommended stainless steel ones, the nails often give way before the shingles made of cedar. The materials will weather to a neutral silver or gray color. However, many building codes no longer allow the use of wood shingles due to the fire danger they present.

For the look of shakes with the fire suppressing ability of asphalt shingles, many homeowners choose heavy asphalt shingles. These so called fake shakes also provide a long life and look good on a house. One of their best characteristics is they require little to no maintenance.

Metal provides another choice. Metal materials are no longer limited to corrugated steel that was often used for agriculture or utility purposes. Copper and standing seam metal roofs are just two of the other options. Additionally, some homeowners are choosing metal shingles. When correctly installed the metal roof can provide a life of 50 or more years.

Homeowners will find many Atlanta roofing choices. While most will continue to select the less expensive option of three tab asphalt shingles, everyone should know the choices reach beyond this one. When owners pay more for materials, they often receive a roof that will last decades longer than the least expensive option on the market.
