California Arrest Records Free Copy Online

By Christopher Evans

California arrest records are important documents that will contain the date of arrest, specific violation and the location where the incident happened. They are considered as legal documents with many uses.

There are many uses of such records. Some people want to review their records or just keep a copy of them for future references. Companies may also ask these records when someone applies to work for them. A clean record will indicate that there have been no arrests of that specific person. Application of licenses may also require the record such as acquiring a gun or driver's license. Finally, the records may also be required when you apply for foreign adoption or VISA/immigration.

The records can be obtained from the California Department of Justice. This is made possible because of the state public records act. Provisions in the California constitution also allow you to access public information.

Obtaining the records will be easy for people who want their own documents. If they haven't been arrested before, the record shown will be clear of any items. The said document can then be used for job applications, license and more. However, getting records of other people may prove to be difficult. You need to have a court order to get one and the courts won't give you one unless there's a valid reason. Companies on the other hand have to request such documents from the court if they are doing background checks and investigations. There are agencies like the police, investigation firms and more that can obtain records from the DOJ. However they have to get approval first from a court or prove that there is a necessity to get such documents.

You can visit the department of justice in California to obtain records of arrests. Before going to the DOJ, prepare important information first. If requesting for your own record, bring identification with you such as valid IDs, birth certificate, SSN etc. If you're looking for a specific arrest, you need the location and subject matter or arrest. Dates of the incident may also be needed. After submitting your request at the DOJ, you need to wait at least 10 to 14 days for a reply. Usually, records are released after just 2 to 3 days. However, if you're records can't be found after 14 days, the DOJ will give you a release date so just wait patiently. Costs for requesting your records can be just 10 cents per page. However if you require digitizing or encoding your records or retrieval from their electronic storage, costs for printing, faxing and encoding will be charged.

There are ways to obtain an arrest record without having to go through legalities. Megan's law allows you to browse the records of sexual offenders. You no longer have to go to a specific DOJ to do this. You can easily browse such records online and many websites offer services that allow you to find sexual offenders near your area. The DOJ also has an online request form that will help in the retrieval of such records.
