Missouri Marital Record Indexes

By Claire Dowell

The Freedom of Information Act has mandated the government to make all public documents available to the local residents. Missouri is one of the states that implement such law. One of the public documents that the residents of Missouri can access is the Missouri marriage records. This document is automatically made when a couple gets married.

Just like any other marriage record, the Missouri marriage record contains the names of the bride and groom. One can find the details of the marriage of the couple such as the date and the place where the couple got married. The names of important people who attended the ceremony can also be found on the file such as the sponsors, witnesses and the couple's parents. If the bride or the groom has been married before, information about previous marriages are also indicated on the file.

Updating the family history tree is one of the common reasons for accessing the marriage records of Missouri. Transactions in the government such as property related and insurance processing would require a marriage certificate. The record is also used by others to check the status of their partners and make sure that they are not yet married.

In Missouri, only marriages that have been registered since July 1948 can be obtained from the office of the Vital Records Section. Files before that date can be obtained only from the county clerk where the marriage took place. Fees have to be paid in order to get the requested file but it varies per county. The one who request for the marriage certificate is required to indicate the name of the bride and groom as well as the date and other important information on the application form. This is done to make the retrieval of the record a lot easier and faster. In addition to that one is also required to provide their name and other personal details to be used to track and document those who have accessed the file.

The retrieval of a marriage certificate in the state of Missouri can be done at the office of the Department of Health under the Vital Records Section. It is where are all public records are being managed. One can also request for the record by doing a phone or mail request. Such remote request has to be sent and addressed to the office itself. It may take a while to get the results of the request especially if it was made through the phone.

One can search marriage records at the office of the Vital Records; however, the search can be hastened when it is done through the Internet. The search can be done even at home so there is no need to go to any office at all, thus it is faster and convenient. This is the reason why the people of Missouri choose to search for the marriage record over the Internet.
